| The limits of video codes | | Posted Tuesday, January 24, 2006 4:18:45 PM by Rose Martins | Video codes are there to protect the video producers. Without the correct codes, the videos cannot be reproduced or viewed on your PC or DVD player. All videos have protective codes, from music videos to video games.
Certain videos come with free code that is accessible to all, others are restricted.
Sites like Myspace require payment to view the video, and therefore use a special html code to protect their online videos.
Some video codes are zoned, allowing only certain DVD players to read the code and play back the video.
It's really not funny when you've rented or purchased a video, sit down to watch and you can't because it's not the right code zone.

| | | Review: SanDisk V-Mate a feature-rich accessory | | Posted Wednesday, February 07, 2007 3:12:49 PM by Blog57 Team | | In 2006, we reviewed a nifty little accessory from Neuros that allowed you to take video that's output from just about any analog video source and convert it to an MPEG-4 video file that's suitable for viewing on portable devices such as the iPod with video, the Sony PSP, and various smart phones and handhelds. The interface wasn't all that snazzy, but the Neuros MPEG-4 Recorder 2 Plus ($160 list) did exactly what it advertised it would do, filling a need for users who wanted to take content they'd already paid for and turn it into a mobile-friendly video format. Since then, Neuros has come out with an even more advanced mini digital VCR, the Neuros OSD Linux Media Recorder ($230), which is drawing from the open-source community for its capabilities. The company has also managed to pick up some competition from a much more established brand, SanDisk, which is now offering the V-Mate video flash memory card recorder.... | |

The IS-F and LF-A are very different vehicles, yet they share the same DNA, design philosophy, and heritage. Prominent in both vehicles, the "F" designation was first conceived nearly 20 years ago with a project internally coded "Circle-F," with the "F" standing for "flagship." | | | Intel's quad-core speeds up video | | Posted Tuesday, November 14, 2006 1:30:58 PM by Blog57 Team | | Tests show that Intel's first quad-core chip, the 2.66-GHz Core 2 Extreme QX6700, should bring impressive speed boosts to complex video-editing and 3D-rendering work. But, while you might think that, since two cores are good, four cores will be twice as good for all your computing tasks, our exclusive tests of the new chip tell a different story. Although PCs with the new quad-core chip (formerly code-named Kentsfield) offer plenty of speed, our tests reveal that many users will get more bang for their buck by sticking with Intel's other Core 2 Extreme chip, the 2.93-GHz, dual-core X6800. (For more on dual-core performance, click here ). For the same price, the X6800 chip offers just a bit more clock speed than the 2.66-GHz QX6700 does, and with few mainstream applications tuned to take advantage of four or more CPU cores, the extra clock speed provides a real performance advantage on most tasks.... | |

| | | Video-game console wars ready to heat up again | | Posted Monday, November 13, 2006 7:11:14 PM by Blog57 Team | | The final two next-generation video game consoles -- Sony's PlayStation 3 and Nintendo's Wii --launch next weekend, signaling the newest war for allegiance in one of the consumer electronic industry's most lucrative segments. Sony and its PlayStation 2 dominated the previous console generation, garnering a 70 percent market share. But a multitude of changes, including higher prices and new controller designs, could spell the end of Sony's grip. You're likely to find a Wii in stores when it is unveiled Nov. 19. But unless you plan to wait in line for a day or longer, don't bother hoping for a PS3 on Friday. It'll be scarcer than last year's Xbox 360. Strategy games The two newest systems offer radically different views on where video game consoles are headed.... | |

| | | New on video | | Posted Friday, November 10, 2006 3:31:15 PM by Blog57 Team | | Dan Brown's novel is utterly preposterous; Ron Howard's movie is preposterously entertaining. Howard is a better filmmaker than Brown is a novelist, and he follows Brown's formula (exotic location, startling revelation, desperate chase scene, repeat as needed) and elevates it into a superior entertainment, with Tom Hanks as a theo-intellectual Indiana Jones and Audrey Tautou (with Hanks, above) as the French cop who becomes his accomplice. The plot is so convoluted, it's a miracle the code is ever broken, but Howard evokes mood and mystery that weaves a spell. Yes, the film makes outrageous claims about the Catholic Church and its order of Opus Dei, but they are such fantasies no one of sound mind could seriously entertain them. Rated PG-13. (Roger Ebert) DVD special features: 11 featurettes.... | |
